A NEW WAY TO EXPERIENCE KOREA’S WEST COAST
After nine years of construction, the 8.64-kilometer Gogunsan Island Trail opened on August 8, linking five islands with four pedestrian sea bridges.
Travelers can now walk from Bangchukdo to Maldo, crossing emerald waters and passing dramatic cliffs and ancient rock formations. Currently in trial operation ahead of its official October launch, the trail brings a remarkable new island adventure to Korea’s west coast.
♦️OUR HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NEW GOGUNSAN ISLAND TRAIL♦️
1. Five Islands in One Journey
Beginning on Bangchukdo, the route continues across Gwangdaedo, Myeongdo, and Bonongdo before reaching Maldo, the westernmost island of the group. Instead of visiting only one island by boat, travelers can experience five distinct landscapes and island communities in one continuous journey.
2. Four Bridges Above the Sea
Four pedestrian-only sea bridges, totaling approximately 1.4 kilometers, connect the islands. The longest is the 555-meter bridge between Gwangdaedo and Myeongdo, offering sweeping views of the emerald sea and the surrounding island chain.
3. A Walk Through 570 Million Years
Discover Independence Arch Rock on Bangchukdo, the folded layers of Book Rock and the cliffs of Folding Screen Rock on Gwangdaedo, and the nationally protected Maldo Fold. Formed approximately 570 million years ago, these geological wonders transform the hike into a journey through deep time.
4. A Full Day Among the Islands
The recommended full route covers approximately 7.7 kilometers and takes around five and a half hours, including scenic stops and rest breaks. Forest paths, coastal cliffs, observation points, quiet island villages, and traveler shelters make it a rewarding full-day coastal adventure.
